Social Responsibility

HEM Suriname is committed to leaving a livable and fairer world for our children and grandchildren. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations, serve as important guiding principles for our organization. Within Suriname, we have joined a group of admirable companies also dedicated to sustainable development goals.

The first SDG, eradicating poverty, deeply resonates with us, which is why we allocate attention and resources to this cause. Additionally, we view education as the foundation for the future and healthy development. For this reason, we encourage everyone at HEM to never stop learning. We support initiatives both internally and externally that benefit women, small entrepreneurs, and provide homework assistance for children.

As distributors of consumer goods, we recognize the importance of minimizing environmental impact. We segregate all company waste, recycle whenever possible, and have significantly reduced the use of plastic.

Another cornerstone of our social policy is the welfare of animals. The issue of stray animals, as well as the neglect and mistreatment of animals, is a grave injustice that we cannot passively ignore.

In the coming years, the aforementioned themes will continue to guide us: poverty, education & inequality, gender, animals, and the environment. As an example, we will raise awareness about waste separation and facilitate our employees to also separate and recycle household waste in their neighborhoods. We are working towards a paperless office environment.

We cannot achieve all of this on our own. Partnerships are essential for us to attain sustainable development goals. We take pride in contributing to the activities of organizations such as Stg Wiesje, Sticris, Su Aid, various animal protection organizations, and many others.
